KHAIRPUR, July 5: The president of Sindh PPP, Syed Qaim Ali Shah, has said that there was no justification for Gen Zia-ul-Haq to overthrow the elected government of Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto because he had successfully negotiated with the then opposition and agreed to hold fresh elections. Speaking at the Jilani House here on Tuesday, Mr Shah said that Mr Bhutto was the only leader in the country who gave a new constitution which was approved even by the then opposition, got 90,000 POWs released and 5,000-square mile of territory vacated from India through talks.

He stressed that the main contribution of Mr Bhutto was that he made Pakistan a nuclear power.

He said that military dictators had ruled Pakistan for more than half of its history.

He said that despite assurances by the chief election commissioner, local bodies elections would not be held in a transparent manner as there were indications that anti-government workers, candidates and leaders would be arrested because there had been transfers in Sindh police soon after the election schedule was announced, and these transfers had had many eyebrows raised.

HYDERABAD: The PPP in Hyderabad city staged a protest rally outside the press club which was addressed by Zahid Ali Bhurgari, Farheen Mughal, Mir Fateh Talpur, Roshan Solangi, Amanullah Siyal, Usman Kennedy and Fayaz Shah.

They said that the Bhutto family had sacrificed their lives for the country. They raised slogans against the Sindh government and accused it of resorting to undemocratic methods against its opponents.

The People’s Labour Bureau also held a function.

DADU Activists of PPP-SB observed a black day on Tuesday.

The activists said that on this day in 1977, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto was removed by a dictator.

The activists of PPP also observed a black day in the district.
