ISLAMABAD, July 5: Senate Chairman Mohammadmian Soomro has said Pakistan is the major player in the global war against terrorism and was committed to rooting out the evil from the society. Mr Soomro made these remarks in an address to the 28th summer convention of Association of Pakistani physicians of North America (APPNA) in Houston Texas.
Terrorism or extremism, he said, was detrimental to the vitals of a society, and therefore, it was in the best interest of Pakistan to continue to fight the war on terrorism and succeeded in it.
He said Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz’s visit to USA, later this month would pave the way for further promoting bilateral relations between the two counties.
To a question on Mukhtaran Mai case, Senate Chairman said the Pakistan government was dealing with gender issues effectively and striving to extend human rights. He stressed the need to clear the misunderstandings towards Islam and Pakistan.
He appreciated the contributions of the association in strengthening Pakistan-US relations, and for its charitable initiative in promoting health facilities in Pakistan under APPNA Sehat Program.
Mr Soomro said President Gen Pervez Musharraf’s vision of enlightened moderation was instrumental in attaining the status of a modern, democratic Islamic sate for Pakistan and served the best interests of the country.
“With continued interest and efforts made by the Pakistan- American community, it would be possible to render help and assistance, and improve the lot of the masses,” he said.
He cited the programmes relating to human resource development, poverty alleviation, health cover and struggle against ignorance and backwardness.
He commended the Pakistani American community for its high professionalism, devotion and attainments.”You rightly make us proud,” he stated.
During question answer session. the Senate chairman replied to queries about Pakistan economic policies, investment opportunities and poverty alleviation programme, provision of education and health facilities, creating more employment opportunities and improving human rights situation in the country.
About Pakistan-India talks, he referred to the determination of Pakistan towards regional stability and peace and hoped that the regional dialogue process would bear fruit and help amicably resolve the outstanding issues.
