GUJRANWALA, July 4: The local chamber of commerce and industry and business community has expressed resentment over levy of 0.1 per cent withholding tax on withdrawal of Rs25,000 or above from banks, and demanded that it should be abolished. The participants of a chamber’s meeting held here on Monday under its president Asad Elahi said the levy of withholding tax was unjust and it would discourage the documentation of business activity, besides bank transactions.

They said the tax would popularize the parallel system of money transaction through currency exchange companies and dealers and harm the small and medium enterprises.

They demanded that the Central Board of Revenue authorities should immediately abolish the tax in the larger interest of business community.

Two injured: Two people sustained injuries here in Kashmir Colony on Monday during an exchange of fire between two groups.

The firing also damaged a transformer and a gas pipeline, suspending supply to the area.

Reports said Malik and Mughal groups had an old enmity. On Monday, they traded fire for half an hour. As a result of which Ahsan, son of Malik Shabbir, and a passerby Sohail were injured and taken to the DHQ Hospital in a critical condition.

Meanwhile, some people caught armed attacker Mohammad Husain and handed him over to police.

The Cantonment police have registered a case against both groups and are investigating.

TRANSPORTERS: Transporters have protested against increase in POL price and demanded that it should be withdrawn immediately otherwise they will enhance fares.

At a meeting here on Monday, they said the government had made the life of people miserable by increasing the prices of daily use items.
