ISLAMABAD, July 4: Members belonging to the Alliance for Restoration of Democracy (ARD) on Monday submitted four adjournment motions to the National Assembly Secretariat on the issue of recent increase in prices of oil, gas, flour and sugar. Talking to Dawn, ARD parliamentary secretary Izhar Amrohvi said the motions had been signed by the members of the component parties of the alliance to seek a debate on the recent decisions of the government to increase the prices of petroleum products, natural gas, flour (atta) and sugar.
He said the motion on increase in oil prices had been signed by 21 members and it had been moved under Rule 92 of the Rules and Procedure for Conduct of Business in the National Assembly 1992.
The motion states: “The price of domestic POL products has been increased in an unprecedented way which will fuel an inflationary trend in the prices of essential items. This increase has caused grave concern amongst the general public and it needs discussion on the floor of the house adjourning the normal proceedings.”
The motion on the increase in prices of gas has been signed by 14 MNAs and it states: “The government has increased the natural gas prices throughout the country by 5.81 per cent to 12.5 per cent with effect from July 1, which is another bombshell on the public following the announcement of increase in the prices of petroleum products.”
Similarly, the motion filed on the increase in the price of flour has been signed by 12 members and it states: “It has been reported that the price of 20kg flour bag has been increased contrary to the government’s promises for the last several months to bring down the prices of wheat flour. It has been further increased by Rs5 to Rs10 per 20kg bag.
“The serious situation has caused grave concern amongst the people who are already screaming on account of dearness of other consumers items.”
Another motion on the issue of sugar prices has been signed by 10 ARD members. It states, “According to press reports, sugar mill owners have increased price of 50kg sugar bag from Rs1,300 to Rs1,450 which is the failure of the government to maintain sugar price within the reach of the public.”
