KARACHI: FCS crisis continues

Published July 5, 2005

KARACHI, July 4: There are no signs of an end to the administrative crisis prevailing in the Fishermen Cooperative Society since 2003, when navy handed over its control to civilians. The FCS is without a chairman and vice-chairman despite the fact that its new Board of Directors, comprising elected and government-nominated ones, is in place since August last year.

The election for the 15-member Board had been held under the Society’s by-laws to pave the way for the election of its new chairman and vice-chairman. However, the Board’s meeting for the purpose had been postponed thrice as the government could not take a decision on who will head this sensitive NGO, responsible for regulating fishing trade through auction.

At present, the FCS is run on ad hoc basis by a managing committee headed by a senior public servant. Though the day-to-day problems of the FCS are being looked into by the committee, the administrative crisis is yet to be resolved.—Staff Reporter
