KARACHI: No garbage disposalsystem in Lyari

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, July 4: Heaps of garbage lying unattended at public places and in streets of Lyari Town have become a common sight these days and the situation is creating unhygienic conditions in most areas of the town. The worst-hit among these areas are the localities along Kara Bhai Karimji Road and Shah Waliullah Road where unattended garbage can be seen in almost every street. The affected people attribute the situation to the inefficiency, negligence and mismanagement on the part of the concerned municipal officials who would always try to absolve themselves of the responsibility using the pretext of shortcomings like shortage of funds, equipment and staff.

Garbage collection and disposal has remained an unresolved problem for years in this town with the main reason being that most of the designated garbage dumping sites have disappeared as a powerful land mafia has grabbed the lands spared by the government for this facility.

Finding no designated dumping site in their locality, people would throw their domestic waste at any place and this leads to the emergence of heaps of garbage elsewhere in the town. The ground floors of a multi-storey building and street corners appeared the very common spots having such heaps of garbage.

There are many localities in the town where garbage could be seen littered all along the streets. One could hardly endure the smell coming from the unattended garbage while passing through an affected street.

Residents and community leader are of the view that the present system seems to have absolutely failed as all efforts to revamp it under the newly introduced devolution plan have proved an exercise in futility.

The scattered and unauthorized dumping sites having mountains of garbage have aggravated the already bad sanitary conditions in many localities, exposing people to serious health hazards.

The situation in Nawabad, Daryabad, Khadda, parts of Baghdadi and Shah Beg Lane areas where civic agencies have utterly failed to manage the garbage disposal system, has become absolutely unbearable.
