Scotland thrash Oman in ICC Trophy opener

BELFAST (Ireland), July 2: Scotland got their ICC Trophy campaign off to a winning start with a comfortable victory over Oman on Friday. At the World Cup qualifying tournament in Ireland, the Scots dismissed their opponents for 83 in the Group ‘A’ fixture.

Scotland reached 84 for loss of four wickets in under 19 overs to win by six wickets.

Man-of-the-Match Paul Hoffman took six wickets for 12 runs off eight overs, including three maidens, and hit 39 to help Scotland to an easy victory.

Hoffman said: “The ball was moving about quite a bit early on and conditions just suited my kind of bowling down to the ground. When we batted, important thing was to increase our run rate to as high a rate as possible in case it becomes an issue in future.”

In Group ‘B’, Holland had a similarly straight-forward win over Papua New Guinea.

The Dutch reached their target inside 15 overs for loss of just one wicket after Edgar Schiferli (5-20) and Ryan ten Doeschate (4-18) had bowled out their opponents for just 69.

In another game in Group ‘A’ match, Canada set Namibia a target of 285, but Africans fell just short at 282.

John Davison was Canada’s hero with a 93-ball 125. The skipper bludgeoned 16 fours and five massive sixes. Ian Billcliff weighed in with 90 while helping Davison add 169 for the third wicket.
