Election in cantonment areas not EC’s job

ISLAMABAD, June 30: The Election Commission has announced that it is not concerned with the holding of local government polls in all 43 cantonments. “The commission has nothing to do with the elections in cantonments,” the acting CEC, Justice Abdul Hameed Dogar, told a press conference after he announced the schedule for the local government elections.

In the coming phase of the elections, as revealed by the election schedule, the people of Islamabad, Northern Areas and cantonment areas of the country will not have a local government system because the polls will not be held in those areas.

Informed sources told Dawn that the military authorities were opposed to the setting up of the local government system in cantonment areas.—Staff Reporter
