Govt to seize misused amenity plots allotted for sports

By A Sports Correspondent

KARACHI, June 30: The provincial government has initiated an inquiry into the amenity plots allotted to the then nationalized banks, autonomous bodies, provincial sports associations and local clubs under Martial Law Ordinance (MLO) 122 quarter of a century back for the promotion of sports.

“The Sindh Sports Board (SSB) is carrying out a survey with the task to prepare a list of plots allegedly being misused, abandoned or those whose lease has been expired on the directives of provincial sports minister, Qamar Mansoor and will submit the findings to him soon”, its director Ghulam Akbar Shah Bokhari told Dawn.

Bokhari said after being assigned the task he had personally visited couple of sites to ascertain latest position. After final compilation of details, the government will seek legal opinion from experts before taking a final decision, he said.

He disclosed that those found involved in wrong doings would be served with notice to vacate the government land while the lease of those who have served the purpose would be renewed.

“After completing legal formalities, the government will take possession of abandoned land which was allotted but remained unutilized”, Bokhari said.

He went on to say that a new strategy would be drawn for the utilization of plots for the same purpose for which they were allotted earlier.

The SSB director confirmed that the plot allotted to Karachi Hockey Association (KHA) in Gulshan Iqbal was in litigation. Presently, it is under the use of Sir Syed University for parking and other purposes.

The list, however, did not contain the names of Muslim Commercial Bank (MCB) and National Bank.

The former took the possession of plot in Block G of North Nazimabad and also constructed a boundary wall before its privatization while the latter went on to construct a sports complex at Clifton.

Dawn secured a copy that contained the list of allotters which reveal interesting disclosures.

It shows that transparency was not maintained and some near and dear were also obliged. The list has never seen the light of day.
