BADIN, June 30: On the call of the Pakistan Fisherfolk Forum, thousands of fishermen in the district observed a black day and hoisted black flags on their houses and boats on Thursday. A large number of fishermen, women and children took out a procession from the PFF office and reached the Shah Latif road. A woman leader of the PFF, Ms Mithan Mallah, led the procession.

The protesters were wearing black armbands and raising slogans against the government’s attitude towards the fishermen.

They demanded that the contract system should immediately be ended.

SANGHAR: On the call of Pakistan Fisherfolk Forum, fishermen from different villages of the district observed a black day on Thursday in protest against the contract system for fishing in fresh-water lakes of Sindh.

More than 300 fishermen including women and children from villages Phulel, Bakkar, Chotiariyoon, Rahujo, Sobhoro, Haran Thari, Haran Bhit and Wadhki gathered outside the press club.

Speaking on the occasion, they said the Sindh government had deprived them of their livelihood by auctioning fishing rights to contractors.

They said they would be facing starvation because all the catch would be taken away from them by contractors and they would not be able to earn enough to purchase food for their children.
