Army win swimming championship

ISLAMABAD, June 29: Army on Wednesday night won the 46th National Swimming Championship bagging 12 gold medals at the Pakistan Sports Complex. The Army swimmers finished with 188 points and besides their gold haul, also captured 13 silver and six bronze medals.

Wapda were runners-up in the competition and collected 102 points for their three gold, four silver and six bronze medals.

Navy took third place in the championship securing 64 points.

Meanwhile, Army with eight gold medals and a total of 116 points led the medals table on Tuesday’s day three that saw two national records being set.

Interestingly it were not the Army swimmers who established those marks. The first record was created by Sikandar Khan of Wapda in the 50m butterfly event in which he clocked 27.09 to shatter the previous best of 27.29.

The silver medal went to Faraz Samad who was home in 28.15 with Navy’s Ali Gul taking the bronze in 28.44.

The other record that fell by the wayside was set by Punjab’s Abdul Aziz in the 50m breaststroke who swam the distance in 32.37 bettering the old mark of 32.65. Army’s Sanaullah came in second for the silver in 32.91 followed by Wapda’s Naseer who clocked 33.82.

Army bagged gold medals in the 50m backstroke through Imdad Ali whose time was 30.04, 400m freestyle in which Mumtaz Ahmed roared to victory in 04:32.44 and their 4x100m medley relay team.

Their winning quartet comprising Imdad Ali, Mehboob Ali, Sanaullah and Nasar Ali clocked 04:26.18.

Results (Tuesday): 50m Butterfly- Sikandar Khan (Wapda) 27.09NR, Faraz Samad (HEC) 28.15, Ali Gul (Navy) 28.44.

50m Breaststroke: Abdul Aziz (Punjab) 32.37NR, Sanaullah (Army)32.91, Naseer (Wapda) 33.82 50m freestyle: Sikandar Khan (Wapda) 25.66, Adil Baig (Army) 25.78, Muhammad Hameer (Army) 27.10

50m backstroke: Imdad Ali (Army) 30.04, Faiz Muhammad (Army) 30.84, M. Zahid (Navy) 31.26

400m freestyle: Mumtaz Ahmed (Army) 04:32.44, Liaqat Ali (Army) 04:40.97, Shahbaz Khan (Wapda) 05:14.70.

4x100m medley relay: Imdad Ali, Mehboob Ali, Sanaullah, Nasar Ali (Army) 04:26.18, M. Zahid, Akbar, Ali Gul, Afzal (Navy) 04:36.95, Ghulam Murtaza, Naseer, Sikandar and Usman (Wapda) 04:56.56.
