SARGODHA, June 29: The mother of the Sargodha district jail riot victim has filed a plea with the district and sessions judge for registration of a murder case against deputy superintendent Asghar Munir and other jail employees, it is learnt on Wednesday. Muhammad Arshad, who was serving a one-year imprisonment, was shot dead during the clash in the prison on Friday last.
Jail superintendent Razaullah Khan had claimed that Arshad was shot dead by the jail officials who he ordered to open fire when a mob (captives) held up six jail officials and pelted others with stones.
Meanwhile, PML District Vice-President Malik Haji Muhammad Aslam Katchela assured the bereaved family that he would make all possible efforts to bring the culprits to book.
Later, he told Dawn that the jail authorities had concealed names of some of the injured inmates. He said besides killing of Arshad, some 15 other inmates were shot at and injured by the officials.
The officials, he said, concealed the names of five of the injured who were being blamed for riot. He apprehended that the jail authorities might help the officials go without punishment.
Mr Katchela, who is also the senior vice-president of the International Commission for Human Rights, Punjab, claimed that the postmortem report had not been given to the family yet. He said all the 15 injured captives would approach the high court once the postmortem report appeared.
The deceased’s family, in the meanwhile, protested on Wednesday afternoon against the jail administration and demanded registration of a case against the killers of Arshad. — Correspondent
