Tax defaulters’ property sealed

By Our Correspondent

GUJRANWALA, June 29: More than 100 rented shops and properties of defaulters were sealed by the teams of the Excise and Taxation Department in Wazirabad, Gujranwala and Qila Deedar Singh on Wednesday. About two weeks ago, the department had issued final notices to these shopkeepers and owners of other properties urging them to clear their outstanding dues within a fortnight. However, they failed to comply with the instructions.

The department’s recovery teams launched a campaign to achieve the target till June 30 and in the process sealed more than 100 shops and other properties in Wazirabad’s main market, Gujranwala and Qila Deedar Singh.

Later, the shopkeepers protested against the excise department for taking an action, and demanded that the government should allow them to reopen their shops.

They said they were paying a monthly rent to the shop owners, who should have been arrested for default.

PRICE LISTS: Market and price control committees have failed to get implemented their price lists they had distributed among shopkeepers in the grain market.

A survey conducted by Dawn reveals that most of the shopkeepers and fruit and vegetable sellers were receiving higher prices of products and articles from customers.

The government has fixed price of a 100 kilogram wheat bag at Rs1,100, 80kg flour bag at Rs1,200 and 20kg bag at Rs242, but the shopkeepers of grain market are selling those for Rs1,300, Rs1,400 and Rs310, respectively.

Similarly, vegetable and fruit vendors are also charging at will.

The committees have fixed Rs160 for one kilogram of mutton, Rs80 for beef and Rs100 for chicken, but the butchers are charging Rs260, Rs150 and Rs130 a kilogram, respectively.

People have expressed concern over overcharging by vendors and shopkeepers and demanded that the authorities concerned should crack down on the violators.

Market committee administrator Chaudhry Shaukat Ali Jatt alleged that the price control committee members were not cooperating with him. However, he said, stern action would be taken against the violators.
