BAHAWALPUR, June 29: Hasilpur police on Wednesday registered a case against 67 people on charges of damaging public and private property during a demonstration against police on Tuesday. The alleged arsonists had taken to roads in this south Punjab town, 100km from here, to protest the torture of a labourer.
Six men were nominated in the FIR, including city PML-N president advocate Malik Naeem, while 61 are unidentified.
They have been accused of setting fire to private vehicles and attempting to suspend railway traffic on the Bahawalpur-Bahawalnagar section.
The other nominated accused are: Malik Naeem’s uncle councillor Hakimuddin alias Lala Imran, Maqbool, Muhammad Amin, Iqbal, Afzal alias Fazli.
No arrest has so far been reported.
Hasilpur DSP told this correspondent that accused policemen would be proceeded against if found guilty.
Sadiq Ali, a resident of Chungi No 4, Hasilpur, was reportedly picked up by a Rescue 15 team from outside a private hospital.
When his condition worsened due to alleged torture, policemen threw him at a deserted area. Following public protest, a case was registered against ASI Abdul Khaliq and constables Shakil and Arshad.
The city police meanwhile claimed that Sadiq was caught attempting to commit a theft.
POTABLE WATER: The residents of Islami Colony, Yazman Road, have threatened that they would come on roads if the tehsil administration failed to make arrangements for provision of clean drinking water.
They regretted that the administration, despite the passage of several months, had failed to solve the issue and selected an alternative place for the installation of new turbines.
They said people were unable to install their own water pumps as they were costly. Water being supplied by the TMA tankers was inadequate to meet their needs, they added.
LAND ALLOTTED: District Nazim Tariq Cheema gave away allotment orders to 162 landless peasants of 13 villages of Yazman tehsil at a ceremony held at Yazman on Wednesday.
