KARACHI: Man remanded in case of constable’s killing


KARACHI, June 27: Justice Amir Hani Muslim of Sindh High Court who is also administrative judge of Anti-Terrorism Courts on Monday remanded a suspect to police custody till July 2 on charge of killing a police constable in a shootout. Ghulam Qadir Patni, produced before the AJ, is charged with killing a police constable, Mohammad Jehangir Minhas, and injuring Ansar Mehmood on March 23 in the limits of Baghdadi police station.

Police said the accused fired on policemen when they tried to stop them for searching and later took official SMG of the deceased.

IO Sarwar Khan told the AJ that the accused was arrested in a criminal case registered at Jackson PS and during interrogation, official SMG of deceased policeman was recovered with 17 live bullets on pointation of the accused.

He sought police custody of the accused as absconding accused Shaukat could be arrested. The AJ, granting police remanded, gave the accused in police custody till July 2.

bank robbery case: The Sindh High Court on Monday admitted for hearing an appeal filed by a convict in a bank robbery case and issued notice to the state.

Raza Khan was sentenced to 10 years with a fine of Rs 200,000 by the Additional District and Session Judge South on June 16 as court found him guilty of committing a Rs3.5 million robbery at NBP Sindhi Muslim Society branch on Feb 21, 2003.

His appeal against conviction was filed before SHC and the court was prayed to set aside the trial court order.

SHC’s single bench, comprising Justice Azizullah M Memon, admitting appeal for hearing issued notice to state counsel.

Meanwhile, same bench disposed of a petition by Mohammad Moosa with direction to SHO Jati to register an FIR against petitioner’s in-laws if cognizable offence is made out according to allegations mentioned in the petition.

The petitioner alleged that his wife Ms Zarina was detained by his in-laws and police refused to register FIR against them. His counsel Javed Akhtar submitted that the petitioner would be satisfied if directives are issued to the police to record his statement about the cognizable offence.

Doctor brothers’ case: Advocate-General Sindh on Monday informed the Sindh High Court that he had recommended appointment of a special prosecutor to argue on behalf of state against an appeal filed by Dr Akmal Waheed and his brother Arshad Waheed who have challenged their conviction by a trial court on charges of harbouring and providing medical treatment to Junduallah activists.

AG Sindh Anwar Mansoor Khan sought adjournment which was opposed by appellants’ counsel Ilyas Khan.

SHC’s division bench, comprising Justice Mohammad Mujeebullah Siddiqui and Justice Maqbool Baqar, observing that state counsel was not prepared to proceed case adjourned the hearing till July 6.

Jundullah: A policeman on Monday identified activists of Jundullah Attaur Rehman and Shahzad Bajwa as attackers who fired on a ranger van in Ferozabad area Karachi on March 19, 2004.

Mohammad Abid, a police constable who was deployed at nearby bank branch at the time of the incident, testified this before an anti-terrorism court in Karachi during his deposition. He said he saw accused coming out from a white car who fired on a ranger mobile.

ATC Judge Feroz Mehmood Bhatti, after testimony by the witness, fixed June 30 for the next hearing.—PPI
