Manzoor steals limelight with splendid treble

By Ian Fyfe

KARACHI, June 26: Jockey M. Manzoor stole limelight at the Summer Gymkhana Race Meeting, when he rode home a splendid treble at the Karachi Racecourse on Sunday.

After finishing third astride the favourite Issey Miyake in the fifth event, Manzoor made amends for that lapse by picking up the spoils in the sixth, seventh and eighth events, to end the afternoon with a splendid treble.

His winner in the sixth event was on Arab Hi Arab, winning the five furlong sprint in a start to finish bid, lowering the colours of the raging favourite Blue Breeze. Manzoor’s next winner came through Noor-e-Arab in the following event, beating Cold Furry by just half a length in another start to finish bid. Cold Furry running third behind Fantastic Again was taken very wide by the bay colt while turning for home and although Cold Furry with Fahim Karim astride came in with giant strides, the thoroughbred grey colt just failed to catch up with the winner.

Manzoor completed his treble through the thoroughbred bay colt King Of Arab beating stable companion Sculptor with Tariq Baran in the saddle by four lengths.

Also sharing in the triple celebrations was owner Imran Ahmed and trainer Ghulam Channa.

Not to be left behind was owner Adil Faisal Farooq, who had a fine double through the dark bay horse Free Spirit in the third race on the afternoon’s card beating the favourite Silver Sweet by one and quarter lengths and followed it up with another winner through Power Of Tiger in the following race, with the bay horse never letting down the connections, sprinting home to victory in the next event beating nearest rival Silver City by two and a half lengths. Also sharing in the jubilation was jockey Mumtaz Ali not to mention trainer G. Murtaza.

On a day where most of the favourites bit the dust, the bay nine-year-old horse Ghori partnered by Riaz Mohammad, won the opener by four lengths, with Baby Tabassum, Raj Kumar and Afzaal Prince completing the frame.

The six-year-old mare Kinjehar sent another favourite toppling in the next event, beating Khush Nazar, Big Daddy and Jallali.

Our day’s best Princess J.T.M. II ridden by Nazil Hussain, sprinted to victory in the fifth race. Going terribly wide at the turn Princess J.T.M. II recovered sufficiently to end the pretensions of Sonia, with favourite Issey Miyake grabbing the third slot from Super Salute. The next race meeting is scheduled for Sunday July 3.
