Double crowns for Aqeel, Yasir and Nasir

KARACHI, June 26: Pakistan No.1 Aqeel Khan, his youngest brother Yasir and promising teenager Nasir Mushtaq, bagged double crowns at the KC tennis championship, which concluded on Sunday evening on the hard courts of the Karachi Club.

Top seeded in the men’s event, Aqeel picked up the handsome prize money purse of Rs60,000, beating third seed Nomi Qamar 7-5, 6-1.

Nomi in a gruelling first set matched his partner stroke for stroke before losing the opener 7-5. However, he fizzled out in the second 6-1 and had to be content with the runners-up purse of Rs28,000.

Aqeel’s younger brother Yasir, seeded at No.4, upset the top seed in the semifinals of the boys under-17 singles and then went on to claim the final with a thrilling match that went to the wire beating Omer Gul 6-7, 6-1, 7-5, earning Rs30,000.

Omer had to be satisfied with Rs12,000.

In another thriller, Nasir Mushtaq beat his doubles partner bespectacled Ghulam Abbas Panju 5-7, 6-3, 6-3, picking up Rs5000 on the way to Ghulam’s Rs3000.

Earlier, in the doubles event these two youngsters, quite popular with the tennis fans at the Karachi Club, added more money to the kitty and involved in another exciting tussle with Zohair Raza and Mustafa Jamali in the doubles event finally coming through 7-5, 7-5 winners.

Nasir and Ghulam received Rs2000 each to Zohair’s and Mustafa’s Rs1000 each.

Promising youngster Zohair Raza, however, was very happy to receive his cheque for Rs5000, beating Omer Shahid 6-2, 7-5 in the boys under-13 singles final. Omer received Rs3000 being the runner-up.

The day before brothers Aqeel and Jalil pocketed the prize money of Rs14,000 in the men’s doubles, receiving a walkover against top seeds Asim Shafiq and Shehzad Khan.

Asim, suffering from an upset stomach, could not come on court. However, he and partner Shehzad received Rs3,500 each.

Tanveer Ashiq and Yasir Khan picked up the spoils of Rs5000 each in the juniors doubles event, after surprising Khurram Nazir and Omer Babar 7-6, 6-2, who had to be satisfied with Rs3000 apiece.

On Saturday evening 14-year-old Sara Mahboob bagged her third title on the trot winning the ladies singles encounter beating the reigning ladies hard court champion Sehar Khawja 6-1, 6-4 to claim the winners purse of Rs30,000.

Sehar putting up stiff resistance in the second set took home the runners-up purse of Rs12,000.

The winners and runners-up also received glittering trophies along with the prize money.

Following were the final results:

Men’s singles: Aqeel Khan bt Nomi Qamar 7-5, 6-1.

Ladies singles: Sarah Mahboob bt Sehar Khawaja 6-2, 6-4.

Juniors under-17 singles: Yasir Khan bt Omer Gul 6-7, 6-1, 7-5.

Boys under-15 singles: Nasir Mushtaq bt Ghulam Abbas Panju 5-7, 6-3, 6-3.

Boys under-13 singles: Zohair Raza bt Omar Shahid 6-2, 7-5. Men’s doubles: Aqeel Khan and Jalil Khan w/o Asim Shafiq & Shehzad Khan.

Juniors Under-17 doubles: Tanveer Ashiq and Yasir Khan bt Khurram Nazir and Omer Babar 7-6, 6-2.

Boys under-15 doubles: Nasir Mushtaq bt Ghulam Abbas Panju bt Zuhair Raza and Mustafa Jamali 7-5, 7-5.
