Narrow win for Hurricane Run

DUBLIN, June 26: Hurricane Run, trained in France by Andre Fabre and ridden by Kieren Fallon, battled to a narrow success in the Irish Derby at The Curragh on Sunday. Runner-up to Shamardal in the French Derby three weeks ago, Hurricane Run, the 4-5 favourite, overhauled 25-1 outsider Scorpion by half a length with 16-1 chance Shalapour third of the nine runners, a further four lengths away.

The classic was marred by the fatal injury to 9-1 shot Gypsy King who broke a leg after two furlongs and had to be put down.

Like runner-up Scorpion, Gypsy King was trained by Aidan O’Brien but stable jockey Fallon had opted to ride Hurricane Run.

It was a first Irish Derby win for Fallon but a second for trainer Fabre, successful in 1995 with Winged Love.—Reuters
