SUKKUR, June 26: More than 250 human rights activists staged a demonstration outside the press club on Sunday to denounce crimes against women, karo-kari and Jirga system.
A procession was taken out under the auspices of the Democratic Commission for Human Development from the Public School Sukkur which marched through the main thoroughfares and reached the press club.
The president of the DCHD, Mr Afrasiyab Khattak, led the procession.
The protesters including women were chanting slogans against karo-kari, Jirga system and crimes against women.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr Khattak said practically martial law was in force in the country in the name of so-called democracy.
He said more than 800 army men had been inducted into civil jobs who were using those institutions for their vested interests.
He said judiciary was an important pillar of the state while judges have taken oath under the PCO instead of the 1973 Constitution under the so- called democracy then how could they provide justice to the people.
Comrade Jam Saqi said women had been deprived of their share and right in society due to which we could not flourish.
Earlier, a seminar titled “crimes against womenfolk” was organized under the DCHD at the Public School Sukkur.
