Islamabad welcomes election

ISLAMABAD, June 25: Pakistan on Saturday welcomed the election of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as president of Iran and hoped that relations between the two neighbours would be strengthened under his leadership.

A foreign ministry statement said Pakistan was happy to see successful completion of the presidential election in Iran in a peaceful and orderly manner.

“We welcome the election of Mr Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as the new president of Iran,” the statement said.

“It is our hope that relations between Pakistan and Iran would continue to strengthen to the mutual advantage of the two countries.”—AFP
