Gatlin ousted from US event

CARSON (California), June 25: Olympic 100 metres gold medallist Justin Gatlin was stunningly disqualified from the US championships when he false-started minutes after former Sydney triple Olympic champion Marion Jones walked off the track before the women’s 100 metres on Friday.

Jones partner, former 100 metres world record holder Tim Montgomery, earlier pulled out of the championships, which are the US trials for August’s world championships in Helsinki.

Gatlin, the championship favourite, was eliminated from the competition when he left the blocks early in his preliminary race

It came after a false start had been charged against the field, meaning Gatlin was eliminated.

He will now attempt to make the trip to Helsinki in the 200 metres were he was the bronze medallist in the 200 metres.

Jones walked off the track just before her preliminary race of the women’s 100 metres.

Jones took one warm-up run down the straightaway for about 40 minutes, then walked down the track before returning to the starting area, picking up her clothing and leaving the track.

There was no explanation for her departure.

Although Jones had run poorly this year, she needed to have a better time of just two people to advance to the second round of the championships.

Montgomery pulled out of the US championships because he can’t concentrate on running, his agent said.

Montgomery was scheduled to run in the opening round of the 100 metres on Friday.

Montgomery lost his world record on June 14 when Jamaican Asafa Powell ran 9.77 seconds, one-hundredth of a second faster than Montgomery’s 2002 record.
