KARACHI, June 24: The top seeds in the men’s singles Aqeel Khan and Asim Shafiq booked berths in the semifinals of the KC tennis championship 2005 with easy victories over their respective opponents at the Karachi Club on Friday.
Second seed Asim forced the former Pakistan No.1 Rashid Malik to retire after taking the first set 6-2 and then led in the second set 2-1.
Top seed Aqeel bundled out Inam Gul from the PAF 6-2, 6-2. Joining them in the last four were second seed Nomi Qamar, who had to work hard in finally overcoming fifth seed Shehzad Khan 6-4, 4-6 and 6-3 and fourth seed Jalil Khan overcame the fighting lefthander Adnan Khan 6-2, 6-4.
Fourteen-year-old Sarah Mahboob advanced to the ladies singles final after a hard fought out battle with sixteen-year-old Saba Aziz 6-4, 6-1.
Sarah who won the ladies singles on the clay courts of Islamabad earlier this year beating Natasha Afridi 6-1, 6-1, went on to bag the KC Summer National hard court championship in Karachi after shocking the top seed Sana Bhagat. Should the young lady win the final on Saturday, this will be her third success this year.
In the under-17 boys singles event, the winning spree of Nasir Mushtaq finally ended when he was beaten by second seed Khurram Nazir 6-3, 6-0.
Nasir, however, kept his chances alive in the boys under-15 event with a 6-1 6-1 triumph over Jahangir Rasheed. He was later joined by his doubles partner Ghulam Abbas Panju, who accounted for Zohair Raza 6-2, 6-1.
Another talented youngster from Islamabad Yousuf Ajum beat his younger brother Zabid 4-6, 6-1, 6-0 to reach the last four.
He also had a tough task on his hands in the under-13 event, before making it through to another semifinal warding off Faizan Khurram 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-2).
In the under-17 event top seed Tanveer Ashiq was through to the semis with a 6-3, 6-7. 6-1 victory over Aamir Ali Khan and was joined by Umer Baber a 6-3 6-3 winner over Abbas Raza and Yasir Khan, who shut out Quetta’s Usman Aijaz 6-4, 6-0.
