KARACHI: Muttahida condemns murder of scholars

By Our Reporter

KARACHI, June 24: MQM chief Altaf Hussain has condemned the murder of Jamia Binnoria Town’s Mufti Atiqur Rahman and Molana Irshad and said their killing was part of a conspiracy to destroy peace in the metropolis.

In a statement, the MQM chief called upon all political and religious parties to refrain from mud-slinging against each other and search for the hidden hand behind such killings.

All patriots, media and intellectuals should also ponder as to who was responsible for disrupting the peace in Karachi, he said.

Mr Hussain said the government of Sindh was doing its level best to improve law and order situation and has been successful in its attempts, but as soon as confidence grows among masses, such incidents are engineered to undermine government’s endeavours.

Expressing his deep grief on the assassination of Mufti Atiqur Rahman and Molana Irshad, Mr Hussain said all MQM workers and office-bearers stood shoulder to shoulder with the office-bearers and members of Jamia Binnoria in their hour of grief.

He also prayed for salvation of the deceased and quick recovery of Mufti Atiqur Rahman’s young son Immad.

Mr Hussain urged the president, the prime minister, the governor and the chief minister of Sindh to arrest the murderers of Mufti Atiqur Rahman and Molana Irshad and launch an investigation into finding the culprits who, he said, were bent upon disrupting the peace in Karachi.

He also appealed to people of Sindh to remain calm, peaceful and united to defeat the conspirators.

Meanwhile, the MQM’s coordination committee has strongly condemned the attack and manhandling of the state minister for religious affairs Aamir Liaquat Hussain, provincial minister Shoaib Bokhari and Ulema committee members by “religious extremists” at Jamia Binnoria in SITE on Friday when they reached there to attend the funeral of Mufti Atiqur Rahman and Molana Irshad.

According to an MQM press release, when MQM ministers reached the venue, some religious extremists raised provocative slogans against them and attacked them. When they went inside the Jamia, some armed people also came in and beat up the federal minister, Aamir Liaqut Hussain, and snatched away official gun from his gunman. For sometime, Aamir Liaquat, Shoaib Bokhari and Ulema committee members were besieged.

The coordination committee deplored the incident and said it was aimed at vitiating the atmosphere in the city. It also appealed to those who were managing Jamia Binnoria to recognise agent provocateurs among them and also urged the MQM supporters to remain calm and not allow the conspirators to succeed in their attempt to destroy peace in the city.
