Sana, Saba book berths in semifinals

KARACHI, June 23: Top seed Sana Bhagat and unseeded Saba Aziz reached the semifinals of the women’s singles in the KC Tennis Championship 2005, warding off their respective opponents at the Karachi Club on Thursday.

Sana got off to a bad start trailing Lahore teenager Quratul Ain Zai 2-4.

But getting her act together, Sana picked up the next 10 points on the trot to book her place amongst the last four.

Sixteen-year-old Saba Aziz from Lahore had an easier time against another sixteen-year-old Anum Saeed.

Anum was forced to retire in the first set trailing 0-5 with a swollen wrist.

The young lady twisted her wrist and gamely tried to get on with the game, but due to immense pain she could not continue with her match, which enabled the overjoyed Saba reach her first tournament semifinal.

On Friday afternoon Sana will now take on the current Ladies National hardcourt champion Sehar Khwaja and Saba will play another talented teenager from Islamabad, Sara Mehboob.

Top seed Aqeel Khan had to bring out his best in finally overcoming former Davis Cup star Nasir Shirazi 6-4, 6-3 in a match which went into long rallies.

Also moving ahead was left-hander Adnan Khan who surprised eighth seed Mahmood Khan 6-4, 6-1 and former Pakistan No.1 Rashid Malik, displaying some lovely strokes and fine drop shots to pin the sixth seed Mohammad Shafiq from Sahiwal 6-3, 6-1.

Seventh seeded lefthander Inam Gul from the PAF, also moved into the quarterfinal round with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Tanveer Ashiq. He was later joined by Asim Shafiq, ending the pretensions of Wasif Cheema 6-4, 7-6 and Jalil Khan a 6-2, 6-1 winner over Khalid Ali Nazar.

In an earlier encounter, Khalid brushed aside Mutib Pasha from Islamabad 6-0, 6-0.

In the boys under-17 singles Yasir Khan bt Heera Ashiq 6-1 4-1 retied. Khurram Nazir beat Mateen Arif 6-2, 6-2 and Tanvir Ashiq accounted for Jahangir Rashid 6-2, 6-2.

In the boys under-15 event, Nasir Mushtaq riding on a crest of a wave, beat Sanaullah 6-2, 6-1 and later joining bespectacled Ghulam Abbas Panju in the doubles, breezed past Qurban Ali and Ali Darbari 6-1, 6-2.

Joining them later were Heera Ashiq and Faizan Khurram ,who beat of the challenge of Umer Shahid and Adil Kohari 6-1, 6-2. Zohair Raza one of the favourites for the under-15 title, beat Bilal Shariff 6-2, 6-0. Also winning easily were Heera Ashiq against Adil Kohari 6-1, 6-0 and Yousuf Ajam a 7-5, 6-3 winner over Faizan Khurram.

Ladies singles (quarterfinals): Saba Aziz bt Anum Saeed 5-0 (retired). Sana Bhagat bt Quratul Ain Zai 6-4, 6-0.

Men’s Doubles Gul Hamid and Usman Ejaz bt Saqib Hassan and Rizwan Hussain 6-2, 6-3. Ali Hasan Bhagat and Yasir Khan bt Abdul Majeed Bachani and Abid Ali Shah 6-4, 6-3. Nadir Ali Khan and Babar Ali Khan bt Irfanullah and M. Baber 3-0 (retired).

Boys under-17 doubles Jahangir Rashid and Matin Arif bt Anas Yousuf Zai and Arshad Maniya 6-3, 6-1. Danish Ahmed and Aamir Ali Khan bt Hidayatullah and Sanaullah 6-3, 6-1.

Boys under-15 doubles Nasir Mushtaq and Ghulam Abbas Panju beat Qurban Ali and Ali Darbari 6-1, 6-2. Heera Ashiq and Fiazan Khurram bt Umer Shahid and Adil Kohari 6-1, 6-2.
