Symonds, Martyn power Aussies to respectable total

CHESTER-LE-STREET (England), June 23: Andrew Symonds and Damien Martyn put on 142 to lead Australia to 266 for five against England in Thursday’s triangular series day-night fixture.

Symonds, playing his first game after being suspended for partying all night before the Australians’ opening fixture of the tournament, made 73 from 81 balls and Martyn ended on 68 not out.

The world champions are seeking their first win of the Triangular series while their hosts have won all three games.

Symonds and Martyn came together after England, who won the toss, had hit back with two wickets for one run following a good start from Australia.

They looked threatening on 95 for one after 20 overs but were soon 96 for three when Steve Harmison removed Ricky Ponting for 27. Andrew Flintoff then got Matthew Hayden next over for 39.

Chris Tremlett had made the initial breakthrough. Hit for 17 and four fours off his first two overs, he dismissed Adam Gilchrist who edged a cut and Geraint Jones fumbled but caught the rebound one-handed to make it 44 for one.

Ponting drove a Harmison half-volley for an extra-cover four and whipped Flintoff over square leg to reach 8,000 one-day runs, only the second Australian after Mark Waugh to reach the mark.

But he never settled and, after making 27, he upper-cut a Harmison lifter to third man where Ashley Giles tumbled forward to take the catch.

Next over Hayden had gone for 39, edging Flintoff behind.

Symonds and Martyn struggled for fluency in the middle overs against some accurate bowling. The pair had to make do with ones and twos despite having seven wickets in hand.

Giles, so effective as he concentrated on a leg-stump line bowling over the wicket, was hit for six over long on by Symonds in the 44th over for the first maximum of the innings and Harmison went the same way as the final charge began.

But Symonds, who should have been run out on 54, saw his luck run out when Trescothick hit with a direct throw from mid-off in the 46th over. Symonds hit two sixes and four fours. Martyn hit just three fours in his 81-ball stay.
