Religious scholar shot dead

KARACHI, Jun. 23: A religious scholar was shot dead and his son and an associate were wounded when gunmen on a motorcycle sprayed them with bullets near Burns Road on Thursday night. Police said Mufti Atiqur Rehman, 52, known as Ustadul Hadith of Jamia Binoria, SITE, was on his way home in his car with Mufti Irshad and son Ammad, 10, after delivering a lecture at the Madina Masjid, Burns Road, when they were attacked.

The three were rushed to the Civil Hospital where Mufti Atiqur Rehman succumbed to his wounds. Mufti Irshad and Ammad were undergoing treatment at the operation theatre, police said.

People said that Mufti Atiq used to deliver sermon at the mosque every Thursday.

Tension griped the Burns Road area following the incident.
