ISLAMABAD, June 23: The parliamentary committee on Kashmir on Thursday said Pakistan should not deviate from its principled stand of demanding a plebiscite under UN resolutions to resolve the Kashmir issue. “Any deviation from the principled stand should be made at the behest of the Kashmiris. Moreover, the confidence-building measures between the two countries should be Kashmir-specific and these will not be sustainable if India does not talk seriously and meaningfully on the issue,” the committee said in a meeting presided over by Hamid Nasir Chattha in the parliament house.
The meeting also decided that Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz should be requested for a briefing on the government’s Kashmir policy.
The members were of the view that different options discussed by the government at various levels had created uncertainty about resolution of the issue.
The meeting was of the view that the Kashmiris should be included in the dialogue process to find a just and durable solution to the issue.
The committee also decided to send delegations to Europe, Africa and the OIC member states in order to put pressure on India to hold meaningful talks on the issue.
The committee members noted with concern that the recent visit of APHC leaders to Pakistan had made it clear that there was no unanimity of views among them.
The chairman informed the committee about his recent visit to Europe and claimed that it had been very successful in raising the Kashmir issue at different forums.
