KARACHI: ATC puts off hearing in convoy attack case

KARACHI, June 22: An anti-terrorism court put off on Wednesday the hearing of the corps commander’s convoy attack case after recording the statement of a prosecution witness. Judge Feroze Mehmood Bhatti of the ATC-2 fixed June 25 for the next hearing after the statement of Jamil Ahmed, a tapadar who had drawn the sketch of the site of the incident.
Defence counsel M R Syed and Mushtaq Ali cross-examined the prosecution witness, who also placed on record the sketch of the site.
The prosecution, represented by Iqtidar Ali Hashmi and Maula Bux Bhatti, has so far examined eight prosecution witnesses.
Ataur Rehman alias Ibrahim, Shahzad Ahmed Bajwah, Yaqoob Saeed, Uzair Ahmed, Shoiab Siddiqui, Danish Inam, Najeebullah, Khurrum Saifullah, Shahzad Mukhtar and Khalid Rao have been charged with a series of offences, including attack on the motorcade of Lt-Gen Ahsan Saleem Hayat on June 10 last year on the old Clifton bridge, which resulted in the death of six army personnel, three policemen and a passerby.
Adnan Shah alias Tipu, Mohammed Qasim, Maaz, Shahab, Bilal, Tayyeb, Hammad and Fasih have been declared absconders.
RANSOM CASE: An anti-terrorism court put off the hearing of a kidnapping for ransom case after recording statements of four prosecution witnesses.
Judge Arshad Noor Khan of the ATC-3 fixed Thursday for the next hearing after the deposition of Judicial Magistrate Mehboob Ahmed Dayo, Sub-inspector Faraz Gul, SI Mohammad Aslam Jatt and ASI Mohammad Tahir, who were also cross-examined by defence counsel Mehmood Qureshi.
Accused Mushtq Jatoi, owner of a hotel in Larkana, is being tried for kidnapping Dr Abdul Ghafoor Bhutto, director of a marketing company, who was released after payment of Rs2.9 million.
According to prosecution, represented by Speicial Public Prosecutor Naimat Ali Randhawa, five armed men kidnapped Mr Bhutto near Gulistan-i-Jauhar on Nov 17, 2004, when he was going to his residence in DHA.
