India announces 36 probables for tri-series

NEW DELHI, June 21: Indian Cricket Board’s five-man selection committee Tuesday named 36 probables for a series of three conditioning camps that will take place over next month in Bangalore.

The first camp will be from June 27 till July 4 and will only be for 16 bowlers. The second from July 5 will include 16 bowlers from first camp and 20 other players. The final from July 13 will be used to pick team for tri-series in Sri Lanka.

The list of 16 bowlers has all familiar names and a few additions like Munaf Patel, Siddarth Trivedi and Harvinder Singh.

The 20 players who join the camp for second stage include all those who have already played for India at some time or another.

That includes all three wicket-keepers M S Dhoni, Dinesh Karthick and Parthiv Patel.

Sachin Tendulkar’s name is also there though he is unlikely to be fit enough to play.

Sourav Ganguly will also attend though his six-match ban prevents him from playing most of tri-series in Sri Lanka.

Uttar Pradesh all-rounder Suresh Raina and left-hand Gujarat batsman Neeraj Patel were also named in probables camp.

BCCI Secretary Suresh Nair said selection committee, before its meeting, had a discussion with new coach Greg Chappell, who gave his thoughts on team composition.

“The committee had deliberation with new coach on various aspects including the camp. The committee also gave Chappell a feedback on performance of Indian team in last so many matches,” Nair said.

He said players, doing duty for various English Counties, have been exempted from attending first two camps.

Four Indians Sourav Ganguly, Dinesh Mongia, Harbhajan Singh and Irfan Pathan are currently playing English county cricket.

He said final squad for tri-series, also involving hosts Sri Lanka West Indies, will be announced on July 18 and team expected to leave on July 24.

Nair said BCCI would request for advancing the tournament by a couple of days for “convenience of telecast”.

So by end of month Chappell would have had a good look at best 36 players available in the country right now.
