KARACHI, June 21: Aamir Ali Khan fighting back courageously downed Ghulam Abbas Panju in a three set thriller, in the first round of the under-17 singles of the KC tennis championship 2005 played on Tuesday at the Karachi Club.
Trailing 2-4 in the first set, Ghulam with his back to the wall closed the gap 3-4, then levelled the scores 5-5. With Aamir serving Ghulam was leading 30-0, but lost concentration which cost him the set 7-5. In the second Ghulam excelling with his serves and volleys won the next set 6-3.
But he started off badly trailing 0-3 in the final set. In a last gasp effort Ghulam catching his opponent on the wrong foot several times levelled the scores 4-4. But this was to be his last hurrah.
Aamir getting back into his strides forced Ghulam into several errors and with a fierce forehand smash, sealed the match in his favour 7-5, 3-6, 6-4.
The current ladies national hard court champion Sehar Khawja began her campaign in style, winning her first round against Beenish Junejo without dropping a point.
Lahore’s teenager Quratul Ain Rai had little difficulty in disposing of Maryam Bilwani 6-1, 6-1, and the same can be said about Anum Saeed, who represented Pakistan in the LTA Championship, winning her first match 6-1, 6-2 against Deep Kirani.
Japan’s Ayaka, also moved ahead after a 6-1, 6-1 triumph against Faiza Hashmi and Sara Mehboob crushed Farah Akhtar 6-0, 6-1.
In a match that went the distance in the men’s singles, Tanveer Munir (Lahore) overcame his counterpart Munir Ashiq 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 after one hour 45 minutes.
Islamabad’s Wasif Cheema downed S. Abbas Raza 6-0, while Umer Babar from Lahore ended the pretensions of Quetta’s Usman Aijaz 6-3, 6-2.
In the boys under-15 first round, Dinish Das had to battle hard before coming through a 7-6, 7-5 winner against Asad Badruddin. In another encounter, Peshawar’s Hidatullah beat Tayab Bilwami 6-2, 6-1.
In the under-13 event, Anus Yousufzai from Hyderabad got the better of Namir Shamsi 6-1, 6-3.
Yousuf Ajam from Peshawar had an easy 6-1, 6-0 victory over Yasir Ali Khan but his younger brother Zahid fell by the wayside beaten by Faizan Khurram 3-6, 2-6. Also making their way into the second round were Ibrahim Khalid, Umer Shahid, Vicky Kumar, Umer Usman and Mustafa Zaidi.
Rain delayed play for nearly three hours. The first cloud burst occurred at 4.00 p.m. and the next, a heavy drizzle fell at 6-15 p.m.
Matches continue on Wednesday morning from 9.00 a.m.
