KARACHI: Classes suspended as two groups clash: Urdu varsity

KARACHI, June 21: The evening classes at the Federal Urdu University of Arts, Science and Technology, Gulshan-i-Iqbal campus, were suspended on Tuesday as a result of a clash between two groups of students. Activists of one of the groups also caused traffic blockage on University Road.
The two groups alleged each other of kidnapping activists, while altercation led to the use of sticks, stones and iron rods, leaving some of the activists from both the sides injured, said a source on the campus.
One of the groups reported to the Rangers deployed at the campus about the manhandling and picking up of two of its activists near the Gulshan campus and finally managed to enter the campus around 2pm.
Due to clash and agitation the traffic on the University Road was affected for some time, while a student was badly hit by a moving vehicle near the campus and shifted to a hospital. Rangers got the campus vacated from students and also stopped them from creating law and order situation in the vicinity.
Talking to Dawn an official of the university said that the BA annual examinations were conducted peacefully, without any interruptions on Tuesday, while the papers of Wednesday would also be held as per the schedule.
The law enforcing agencies are already alert, while strength of Rangers’ personnel on the campus is also being increased, the official added, saying that the situation was under control.
After a gap of five days, academic activities at the Gulshan campus were resumed only on Monday. The university registrar in a press release said that some activists of a student group had tried to agitate, but were timely handled and dispersed on Tuesday. All sorts of academic and administrative activities would be observed as usual on Wednesday on the campus, he added.
