Adnan stretched by Nasir

KARACHI, June 20: Nineteen-year-old left-hander Adnan Khan had to display his best in overcoming 14-year-old Nasir Mushtaq, when the men’s singles KC Tennis championship 2005 got under way at the Karachi Club on Monday. The former under-15 and under-17 champion had a real fight on his hands as Nasir playing his third match of the day matched his superior opponent with fine backhand and forehand drives down the flank.

The match was not so easy as the score sheet suggests. Several times Nasir held his opponent at deuce but Adnan’s more experience finally paid off.

Earlier appearing in the boys under-15 event, Nasir disposed off Ali Mahmood Khan 6-1, 6-3 and going on court almost immediately once again in the boys under-17 singles, beat Ali Darbari from Hyderabad 6-1, 6-1.

Over 275 entries from all over the country including the 12 received from Hyderabad was indeed a record for this tournament and the prize money of Rs.344000 is the richest tennis tourney to date in the country.

Top seed and defending champion Aqeel Khan breezed past Mahir Nisar 6-1, 6-1, after the latter tried his best to turn the tide but all in vain.

Younger brother Jalil also went through by a 6-1, 6-1 margin against Abdul Majeed.

Mutyib Pasha had to break into a sweat before overcoming Ali Asghar Bandeali 4-6, 6-2, 6-1, while the tall veteran Gul Hameed, a former Pakistan No.8, moved into the next round with a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Saad bin Arif.

Eight seed Mehmood Khan from Peshawar beat Matin Arif 6-2, 6-2 ad Tahir Iftikhar a former Pakistan seed made short work of M. Babar 6-1, 6-2. In another encounter Hari Das battled hard to get the batter of Zaid Noorsumar 6-4, 6-4.

Mustafa Nanji after qualifying for the main round in the under-17 event, after disposing off Vishal Chohan 6-1, 6-1, made his way into the second round in the main event, winning his match against Salman Ahmed 6-0, retired.
