Young Emperor romps home

By Aftab Gilani

LAHORE, June 20: Six-year-old dark-bay gelding, Young Emperor, ridden by jockey Aamar Parvaiz, gave a magnificent front-running display when he beat joint favourite filly, Red Rock by a length to win the feature event during the Lahore Summer Meeting at the Racecourse on Monday. Races scheduled for Sunday were postponed for a day due to the demise of a Lahore Race Club (LRC) steward, Mir Ikram Mahmood, who died on Sunday morning.

Who Dares finished third, a distance behind while Pawan completed the frame, another two lengths further behind. In all, seven ran for this feature event contested over 1200m.

The winner clocked one min 12 4/5 secs.

Jockey Aamar Parvaiz excelled among riders when he brought home a brace of winners.

He first piloted home an odds on favourite Happy Moon in the third race defeating Green Hill by three-fourth of a length over 1200m.

He completed his double by winning the feature event astride Young Emperor.

Both his winners were owned by Haroon Ali and trained by Khurrum Hussain.

This was a day of punters when six favourites obliged the favourite backers in seven events.

The only rank outsider to upset punters’ calculations was the seven-year-old horse Kala Shah Kaku, who won the fifth race unchallenged. Trainer M. Kamal too had a fine afternoon when he sent out two winners.

He first saddled eight-year-old mare, Lovely Diana in the opener, who won by a big margin of distance.

He later saddled three-year-old colt Thrill, who was an easy winner in the fourth event.

This was Thrill’s first victory of his career.
