Former Indian Test star Mushtaq Ali expires

NEW DELHI, June 18: Former India Test batsman Mushtaq Ali, who helped set the record for most runs in a day’s play in Tests, died at his home in the central city of Indore aged 90, died, his family announced on Saturday.

A tall and flamboyant opening batsman, Ali played 11 Tests over 18 years after making his debut against England in 1933-34 as a left-arm spin bowler.

He became the first Indian batsman to score a Test hundred away from home, against England at Old Trafford in 1936, an effort which helped set a record 588 runs amassed in a single day.

The dashing batsman outpaced opening partner Vijay Merchant as the duo added 203 runs.

Mushtaq slammed 112 and Merchant 114 as India salvaged a memorable draw despite conceding a huge 368-run first innings lead in the match.

Mushtaq played for 24 years in first-class cricket scoring over 13,213 runs at an average of 35.90 with 30 centuries and also bagged 155 wickets. He scored 621 runs in Tests, including two centuries.

His son Syed Gulrez Ali and grandson Syed Abbas Ali have also played first-class cricket.—Agencies
