KARACHI, June 18: The Pakistan People’s Party has demanded resignation of the Sindh government for its failure to arrest and punish killers of Munawar Suhrawardy, Abdullah Murad and other politicians. This demand was articulated in one of the eight resolutions adopted in a public meeting that was organized to observe first death anniversary of PPP leader Munawar Suhrawardy here on Friday evening. The resolutions were released to the Press on Saturday.
Expressing deep anguish over the non-arrest of the murderers of Munawar Suhrawardy, PPP activists declared that the non-arrest of killers clearly indicated that the government was not capable to maintain law and order.
The public meeting also demanded, what it called, an end to the conspiracies and hurdles in the return of Benazir Bhutto to the country because her return was “a must for the security of Pakistan and that any hurdle in her way is against the national interest. The people of Pakistan cannot tolerate conspiracies against PPP chairperson anymore”.
Another resolution stated that federal and the provincial regimes had failed on every count and had lost any moral ground to continue clinging on to power hence announcement should be made for holding of free, fair and transparent general elections in 2005. Democracy should be completely restored and an independent Election Commission with the consensus of all the political parties and power should be handed over to the elected representatives of the people after such free and fair general elections.
The participants of the meeting was of the view that the budget 2005-06 was the budget of rich and elite and demanded its withdrawal and presentation of a new budget, inserting the proposals of opposition to resolve the genuine problems of labourers, peasants and the downtrodden masses.
They demanded withdrawal of all the bans on the return of Nawaz Sharif, Shehbaz Sharif and others and acceptance of their right to return to Pakistan. The meeting also condemned indiscriminate and non-transparent process of privatization of national assets and demanded withdrawal of PTCL privatization process and release of all the arrested workers of the company. In another resolution, PPP activists strongly condemned the policy of violations of human rights of Sindh government and demanded release of MPA Zahid Bhurgari, Mir Mohammad Khan Lund, Mohan Lal and other political and labour prisoners and demanded withdrawal of cases against Jam Saqi.
The PPP activists also resolved that all false cases against Ms Bhutto and her husband Asif Ali Zardari should be withdrawn. They termed such cases as political victimization of popular national leadership.
