Scans clear pacemen Jones, Lee

LONDON, June 17: Scans have cleared Australian bowler Brett Lee of any serious damage to his right shoulder and he hopes to play in a triangular cricket series against England and Bangladesh this weekend, Cricket Australia said on Friday.

Lee suffered a twinge in his right shoulder at Taunton on Wednesday and couldn’t complete his spell in Australia’s shock four-wicket defeat against Somerset.

It was Australia’s final warm-up match before they enter NatWest Series triangular one-day event with games against Bangladesh in Cardiff Saturday and England in Bristol Sunday.

Lee and Australian team physiotherapist Errol Alcott travelled From Cardiff to London Thursday to seek specialist advice and diagnostic scans.

Doctors determined Lee suffered bruising to front of shoulder After being hit by ball when batting during Australia’s 100-run Twenty20 defeat to England Monday and this might have caused some restriction to his bowling action.

“This change of action has exacerbated a previous minor, shoulder injury Lee sustained four years ago,” Cricket Australia said.

Team doctors said prognosis for Lee was good and condition was expected to settle down quickly.

“I am relieved there is no major damage and I am looking forward to playing for Australia in this up-coming series,” said Lee.

Meanwhile, fast bowler Simon Jones will be re-assessed by England on Saturday after a scan on his injured right knee showed up clear.

The Glamorgan paceman, who sustained the injury while warming up for Thursday’s triangular series one-day victory over Bangladesh at The Oval, has not yet been ruled out of Sunday’s game against Australia in Bristol.

Jones’s injury is unrelated to the ruptured knee ligaments he suffered on the 2002-03 Ashes tour to Australia, England team spokesman Andrew Walpole said on Friday.—Agencies
