KARACHI: MQM, ST register FIRs

KARACHI, June 17: The Sunni Tehreek and the Muttahida Qaumi Movement on Thursday night lodged counter FIRs against each other after their sector offices were attacked by unknown persons in Azizabad.

On behalf of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement, the FIR was lodged by Fazal-i-Haq, justice of peace. According to him, he was holding a meeting at a park where unit 155 of MQM was situated. Activists of Sunni Tehreek came to the park and started firing at the unit office, he said.

Subsequently, FIR 135/2005 was lodged against the ST nominating their activists on the complaint of Fazal-i-Haq.

Another FIR was lodged on the complaint of Sajjad Qadri against MQM activists for attacking ST office in Husainabad.

Police also arrested an activist of ST identified as Shahid Memon and registered an FIR 138/2005 under arms ordinance.

According to a statement issued by the Sunni Tehreek, Muttahida workers attacked its sector office in Husainabad. They used firearms in the attack. Two ST workers M. Ijaz and M. Qadri were injured in the attack.

Meanwhile, the slain activist of Sunni Tehreek was laid to rest in New Karachi amid a tense atmosphere here on Friday.

Muhammad Ashraf, 30, and his associate, Faizul Hasan Butt, had died on Wednesday night when unknown men opened fire at them near Radio Pakistan at M.A. Jinnah Road.

The body of Faizul Hasan was flown to his native town Jehlum on Thursday night by a PIA flight.

The funeral of Muhammad Ashraf was held after Friday prayers in New Karachi.
