LAHORE, June 16: Ten players of the Punjab Tennis Academy (PTA) won their matches in the India-Pakistan Punjab Friendship tennis tournament on the opening day at the Bagh-i-Jinnah on Thursday. The matches are being played on Pro-set (one-set) basis and the men, women, boys and girls of PTA and Chandigarh Tennis Academy (CTA) are taking part.
Sohail Iqbal and Naveed Najum (PTA) caused the first upset of the tournament when they beat favourites Pawan Kapoor and Amitabh Singh (CTA) in a hotly contested match that was stretched to a tie-breaker.
The winners won 8-7 (7/3).
In the U-18 singles (boys), Khurram Nazir (PTA) defeated Parasant Mehta (CTA) 8-4.
In the second singles Talal Khan beat Shaharyar Niazi 8-5.
Five matches were played in the U-14 category singles. In the first match, Heera Ashiq outclassed Adnan Aslam 8-0.
The second singles won by Faizan Khurram, who defeated Gangandeep Singh (CTA) 8-6. Waqas Malik beat M. Abbas 8-5.
In the U-14 girls category, Muneeza Malik (PTA) beat Ramsha (CTA) 8-5 and Zarnab Amin defeated Asia Malik 8-5.
In the ladies singles, Quratul Ain (PTA) beat Sonali Bansal (CTA) 8-3.
Rai Zahid Zafar and Rao Iftikhar beat Khawaja Khurram and Khalid Ikram Malik in the veteran doubles 8-6.
