KARACHI, June 15: Hasan Askari and Muhammed Zubair emerged on top with 64.06 per cent from the North-South direction to clinch the Karachi Club pairs bridge tournament on Tuesday. Iqbal Dada-Javed Rehman won by 57.06 per cent from the other direction.
Hasan Askari-Muhammed Zubair started with a below average score against Tariq Zafar-Syed Ameer Hasan when they went down in 2NT
and again beat one trick in Seven Diamonds, however, Zubair bid and made Four Spades on Board-2, which no other pair could bid but every one made ten tricks for a clear top.
On Board 3 A K Bhurgri was the only declarer in Seven Diamonds to make by his skilful play. Askari-Zubair collected another top on Board 7 bidding and making Six Spades against Afzal Shaikh-Salman.
In fact the score relegated Afzal-Salman to second spot from East-West direction. On Board 8, Hasan Askari depending on his experience made Grand slam in No Trump, where most North-South pairs stopped at slam in hearts.
Bhurgri-Asghar Naqvi missed the target by a whisker. They scored 63.99 per cent for the second berth. Yousuf Sulaiman-Tahir Dada and Asghar Naqvi-Bhurgri were the only two pairs bidding and making Four Hearts on Board 14 thus sharing the top score.
The contract was defeated at four other tables. On the very next Board Bhurgri-Naqvi bid and made Four Spades which was beaten at every table thus gaining a clear top.
From the East-West direction Iqbal Dada-Javed Rehman surprised more senior pairs by their excellent performance.
They earned a near-top score against Bhurgri-Naqvi by making eleven tricks in 2NT as all other pairs were beaten in four hearts.
Again against the same pair they bid and made Four Spades on Board 3 that was beaten at other tables.
On Board 6 where Seven Diamond was cold, Yusuf-Tahir Dada landed in No Trump which was beaten by two tricks that gave Iqbal Dada-Javed Rehman a clear top score.
Against Iqbal Haider-Ibrahim Baig they got another top when the opponents stopped at game level and made only one over-trick on Board 7 where a slam was laid down.
The same pair conceded another top to Iqbal Dada-Javed Rehman when stopped at 6H
on Board 8 where 7H was laid down.
Afzal Shaikh pairing with Salman finished runners-up from East-West by 56.17 per cent.
SUMMER BRIDGE
Karachi Gymkhana Club will launch their regular yearly event, Summer Bridge Festival, commencing from next Saturday.
It would be a two-day event and seven rounds of Swiss Movement will be played.
