PIA outclass SSGC to lift trophy

By Saleem Shahid

QUETTA, June 15: Pakistan International Airline (PIA) lifted the 26th All Pakistan General Mohammad Musa Cup hockey when they drubbed hapless Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) in the final 6-0 on Wednesday. he Balochistan Chief Minister Jam Mir Mohammad Yousuf was the chief guest and announced a grant of Rs. 60 million for the construction of hockey stadium in Quetta.

The final match proved one-sided as PIA fielding several international players completely outclassed SSGC in every facet of the game.

PIA, led by Olympian goalkeeper Ahmed Alam, started putting pressure from the very beginning and opened the scoring in the 13th minute through right-in Mukhtar. Right fullback Ali Raza doubled the lead when he converted first penalty corner in the 18th minute. Centre forward Asim made it 3-0 in the 26th minute as SSGC defence surrendered under tremendous pressure exerted by the rampaging PIA forwards.

There was no let up in the second session and Ali Raza slammed his second goal when he converted another penalty corner in the 38th minute.

SSGC defence caved in again in the 49th minute when left winger Farooq took advantage of some slack marking to make it 5-0.

However, in the last ten minutes of the second half SSGC forwards made a couple of attempts to reduce the margin but the experienced PIA defenders and Olympian Ahmed Alam foiled their attempts to find the net.

In the last minute of the match PIA completed the rout when right half Shafqat Malik sounded the board after a beautiful move.

PIA earned six penalty corners while SSGC could get two but Pakistan’s penalty corner specialist Sohail Abbas failed to find the net on both the occasions.

Pakistan Army claimed third position after getting walkover as Wapda failed to turn up.
