Australia beaten again

TAUNTON (England), June 15: Australia’s cricketers were beaten again on Wednesday, losing by four wickets to county side Somerset in a one-day match. It was the Australians’ second defeat in three days after going down by 100 runs to England in a Twenty20 game.

Australia posted a healthy looking 342 for five from their 50 overs on Wednesday but centuries from Somerset’s opening overseas pair of Sri Lanka’s Sanath Jayasuriya (101) and South African skipper Graeme Smith (108) undid the tourists.

The duo put on 197 in 23 overs as Australia’s pace duo of Glenn McGrath and Brett Lee struggled to make an impact.

Lee exited with a shoulder injury after completing only four overs and 20-year-old James Hildreth with an unbeaten 38 helped lift the home side to victory on 345 for six with 3.1 overs left.

Earlier, Somerset suffered as the tourists showed no mercy to a bowling attack that badly missed the injured former England pace bowler Andy Caddick.

Matthew Hayden (76) and captain Ricky Ponting (80) both retired unbeaten to allow others in the Australian order a chance of time in the middle before the triangular series.

Simon Katich was Hayden’s largely silent opening partner in a stand of 60 which was broken by the last ball of the 10th over.

After Hayden retired to allow Damien Martyn some time in the middle, Ponting picked up the pace, celebrating his 50 with successive leg-side sixes off Smith’s off-spin and then called it a day after another maximum over long-on off Gareth Andrew.
