KARACHI: Landhi, Liaquatabad present budgets


KARACHI, June 15: Two towns of the city presented surplus budget for the year 2005-06 on Wednesday. A surplus budget of Landhi Town was presented by Nazim of the town Mohammad Shahid on Wednesday.

The Rs347.468 million budget shows a surplus of Rs1.088 million.

The nazim told the town council that receipts amounting to Rs289.35 million would be received from the provincial and city governments, while another Rs26.1 million were expected to be recovered in the head of capital money (dues). He said Rs32 million would be received from different departments of the town.

Against the receipts, the expenditures have been estimated at Rs151.17 million for salaries, Rs10.9 million for repair and renovation and Rs113.8 million for development works.

In compliance with the government’s order, a sum of Rs2 million was allocated for setting up a CCB board and Rs53 million was set aside for repair of streets, roads and footpaths. An amount of Rs3 million was allocated for repair of drains and Rs9.5 million for installation of lights and Rs11.5 million for greenery and recreation-related improvement work.

Naib nazims would be allocated Rs1.5 million each, the collective amount totalling Rs18 million, in addition to the allocations from the development schemes pertaining to their respective UCs.

The budget provides for a health insurance policy for the town’s employees for which Rs7 million have been earmarked.

Some members of the town council tabled a resolution suggesting some amendments, which were appreciated by many other members.

The session, which was also attended by Naib Nazim of the town Dr Bukhat Rahim Shah and TMO Mohammad Nazir Lakhani, was adjourned to Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Liaquatabad Town has presented its annual budget for the fiscal year 2005-2006 of Rs293,931,734 with surplus of Rs535,134.

Town Naib Nazim Shahabuddin presented the budget in a meeting of Town Council here on Wednesday. Town Municipal Officer Ghufran Ahmed, Town Finance Officer Hidayatullah Memon, council members and other officials attended the meeting.

According to the budget statistics, Rs98,496,000 were earmarked for health and sanitation; Rs112,763,000 for communication and power; Rs30,957,000 for parks, sports and recreation; Rs5,548,000 for libraries; Rs2,950,000 for citizen community board; and Rs42,682,600 were allocated for other municipal services.

A sum of Rs200,000,000 is expected to be generated from octroi; Rs35,000,000 from property tax share; Rs4,000,000 from advertisements; Rs6,000,000 from trade license; Rs20,000,000 from special grant of government; and Rs18,637,000 would be received under miscellaneous heads.

Reviewing briefly the past four years’ development works, the town naib nazim told the council members that Gharibabad Chowrangi Underpass Project, development of a model park in Nazimabad, construction of Liaquatabad Town workshop, replacement of dilapidated and obsolete sewerage and water supply lines from the town’s funds were some of the major projects carried out by the town administration.

Completion of Sharea Ibn-i-Sina, setting up of Nadra’s office at Dakkhana Liaquatabad, installation of F-6 model plane near Sir Syed Girls College in collaboration with Pakistan Air Force, provision of latest system of streetlights at Dakkhana, Nazimabad and Abbasi Chowrangi, installation of lights under Liaquatabad Flyover and Nazimabad Bridge, initiation of road from Nazimabad Chowrangi to Guru Mander were also counted among the projects carried out during the past four years.

Besides, roads were also widened by removing encroachments at Gulbahar Sanitary Market and grand anti-encroachment operation was launched at Liaquatabad Super Market while the town gave priority to carpeting of streets and provision of streetlights, naib nazim added. —PPI
