UN official quits

UNITED NATIONS, June 14: Assistant Secretary General for Political Affairs, Danilo Turk, quit his post on Monday in protest against UN Secretary General Kofi Annan’s decision not to promote him as Undersecretary General.

The UN chief appointed Nigerian diplomat Ibrahim Gambari as the new Undersecretary General for political affairs.

“Annan appointed somebody from outside the secretariat to the post. I don’t think that is good from the point of view of the political affairs sector,” Mr Turk told Slovenian public television in a live interview.
