PESHAWAR, June 13: The NWFP government has proposed conversion of town councils into tehsil councils in the eight districts of the province including Peshawar, according to the provincial minister for local government and rural development. The minister, Sardar Mohammad Idrees, said that the provincial cabinet had discussed some proposals of amendments to the NWFP Local Government Ordinance 2001 during an informal meeting on Monday and they would be sent to the governor on Tuesday for promulgation.
Speaking at a press conference here on Monday, he said that the proposals included that of conversion of town councils into tehsil councils and added that the process would be completed before June 20.
He said that according to another proposed amendment, councillors would be paid allowances and honorarium which they were not getting now.
Another proposed amendment would authorize members of national and provincial assemblies and Senate to review annual development programme in their districts if needed, the minister said.
He said that after the announcement of the schedule of the local bodies’ elections by the chief election commissioner, district governments would stand dissolved and the chief secretary would notify the appointment of caretakers who would be senior officials.
He said that after the announcement of the election schedule, development schemes would be initiated in the districts only with the prior permission of the chief election commissioner.
Answering a question, the minister said that the next local body elections would be held in a free and fair atmosphere and the provincial government would not interfere in them.
NAZIMS: Meanwhile, nazims of towns and tehsils have demanded that those federal and provincial ministers, who are aspirants for the elections of district nazims or naib nazims, resign from their offices 60 days before the local bodies’ elections.
The demand was made at a meeting held here on Monday and presided over by Nazim Town-I (Peshawar) Haroon Bilour.
The meeting also demanded that town and tehsil nazims be given representation in the Local Government Commission.
MoU SIGNED: A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed here on Monday between the Health Department and Malakand Rural Development Project (MRDP) for provision of training facilities to female health workers in the project area, app adds.
The provincial secretary, Health, Abdul Sammad Khan, and the project director, MRDP, Mohammad Ashfaq Khan, signed the memorandum.
According to the MoU, the Health department with the collaboration of the MRDP would impart training to 400 health workers, including lady health workers, midwives, Public Health and ECG technicians.
Trainings of different durations would be arranged for female candidates at various health-training institutes of the province. The main aim of this collaboration is to improve the health status for women with the participation of the community in the project area on the basis of need.
It must be mentioned here that the MRDP has already trained 72 lady health workers and 600 traditional birth attendants in the project area while a further 85 lady health workers and midwives are about to complete their training.
The director, Provincial Health Services Academy, Dr Salim Javed Gandapur, and Programme Manager Gender Development MRDP Ulfat Begum were also present on the occasion.
