KARACHI: Use of modern technology urged for uplift
KARACHI, June 13: The Sindh Chief Secretary, Fazlur Rehman, called for the utilization of modern technology and an effective strategy for early implementation of the road sector development programme under the Provincial Department of Works and Services. He hoped that all the projects being executed under the works department would be completed within the stipulated time.
The chief secretary expressed these views during a briefing about the department by its Secretary Faisal Saud. He said the projects of roads and bridges initiated during the current year must continue with commitment during the new financial year.
Mr Rehman called for prudent utilization of available resources and allocated funds for ensuring progress and prosperity of the province.
He, however, observed that with the utilization of available resources, quality performance would be possible only when human resource would also be skilled and trained in the respective fields and there would be proper monitoring of work.
The chief secretary expressed his satisfaction over the performance of the department and told the concerned officials that he could be approached anytime when his attention was required to ensure high standards of work during the execution of projects.
During the briefing on various projects, the existing condition of Thatta-Sujawal Bridge on the River Indus was reviewed.
It was pointed out that this bridge was constructed in 1971 and handed over to the Sindh Highway Department for road maintenance in 1986.
The bridge is being used for the last 35 years for transportation and traffic movement.
It was informed that opinion of experts was sought for repair and maintenance of the bridge’s footpaths, planks, railings and suspension joints and now the road from Thatta to Badin including this bridge is under the supervision of chief engineer (Foregin Aided and Special Projects) for rehabilitation which is going on with the cooperation of the Asian Development Bank.
It was informed that the work order had been issued to the contractor and on completion of inspection by the consultants and in the wake of their report, every effort would be made to complete the work during 2005-06. — APP
