Five shot dead over marriage dispute

By Our Correspondent

NOWSHERA, June 11: Five people were killed and six wounded in an exchange of fire between two groups over a dispute on girl’s engagement, police said. Qari Nasir, brother of the girl, told Akora Khattak police that Wali Khan and his son of tried to kidnap his sister which led to a scuffle. He said that he was wounded and one of his close relatives was shot dead in the Adamzai village on Friday.

However, the accused party told police that they had gone to Qari Nasir’s house along with a jirga to seek the hand of his sister for one Mohammad Shafi, son of Wali Khan.

Wali Khan alleged that earlier they had agreed to all conditions set by the girl’s brother, but later they backed out of their commitment.

He claimed that he had gone to the girl’s house again with a jirga to seek the hand of Ghulam Nabi’s daughter. But during parleys, the girl’s brother opened fire, killing his son Mohammad Shafi and his brother Jafar Shah and two jirga members, Noor Kalam and Zeenat, and wounding six women.
