KARACHI, June 10: A proposal pertaining to the allocation of 5000 acres of land for development of sports city in the outskirts on the link road between national and super highway and close to proposed education city is in the pipeline and awaits approval of the Sindh chief minister.
When approved, it will be put forward before the provincial cabinet for framing the government policy in this regard.
The proposal has been recommended by the provincial sports ministry with an eye on creating international standard infrastructure at one place capable of hosting top class competitions including the South Asian Federation (SAF) games in future.
It envisages creating facilities for indoor and outdoor games besides residential village to meet the growing demand of people connected with sports in the province.
The summary, a copy of which was obtained by Dawn, says that with the development of urban areas, it has became difficult to acquire proper area of land for sports facilities, unless a proper planning is made and ample land in reserved.
“It is high time to take a bold decision and acquire at least 5000 acres of land exclusively for development of a sports city,” it says.
It suggests that sports city would attract international donors, sports promoters and private sector once the land is earmarked and master plan prepared. In addition, its creation will help create employment.
