Jan’s double spurs PWD

By Our Sports Reporter

KARACHI, June 10: Mohamnmad Jan struck twice to give PWD a 2-0 victory over Mauripur Baloch in the National Challenge Cup soccer qualifying round opener at CDGK Stadium on Friday.

After remaining goalless for 37 minutes, PWD shocked Mauripur Baloch with back-to-back goals as Jan was on target in the 38th minute before netting his second a minute later.

Mauripur Baloch should have reduced the margin and even equalised had they not missed a number of sitters in the second half.

Majid was guilty of squandering no less than three opportunities once he slammed the ball straight into PWD goalkeeper Sajid Hussain’s gloves from 20 yards.

Mauripur Baloch mounted pressure but all they could do was to waste the chance with Mahboob shooting over, while Abid’s long rage effort rattled the bar.

The lacklustre game between Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) and City District Government Karachi (CDGK) ended in a 0-0 draw.

SSGC could have won but had to return empty-handed, chiefly because of their lack of finish, although they had number of opportunities.

Aftab of SSGC hit the side-netting off a Shah Nawaz corner in the 16th minute.

Despite having time and opportunity, Hanif delayed action and instead sent a cross for Khalil Ahmad who slammed the ball over the bar off a rebound from CDGK goalkeeper Shareef Jr.

In a brilliant counter-attack, Ghulam Ali of CDGK shot from 16 yards only to see SSGC goalkeeper making a fine save.

Saturday’s fixtures:

Habib Bank v Naka Mohammadan at 4.00pm; KESC v Korangi Rangers at 6.00pm.
