KARACHI: Deadline in Saqi case

KARACHI, June 10: Justice Amir Hani Muslim of the Sindh High Court, who is also administrative judge of anti-terrorism courts in Karachi, on Friday ordered the investigation officer in the case concerning Jami Saqi and his wife to complete investigations of the case till June 17.

Akhtar Sultan, arrested by the police from Hyderabad, is charged along with her husband, Jam Saqi, a human rights activist for kidnapping her own nephew for ransom. Jam Saqi, however, has not been arrested by the police in the case so far.

Complainant Shakeel Naich, who is ex-brother-in-law of the accused, registered a case at Eidgah police station, Karachi on May 29, 2005 accusing her and her husband of kidnapping his six-year-old son Rafay and demanding ransom of Rs500,000.

Ms Sultana, denying the allegations of kidnapping, termed it a “case of political victimization”.

She told the administrative judge that the alleged abducted was living with his mother Ms Afsar Sultana and stepfather Abdullah Khan Chachar in Sukkur.

The IO, who was directed in the last hearing by the Justice Amir to verify the statement of the accused, informed on Friday that he had found the house of the Abdullah Khan Chachar, stepfather of the abducted, locked, while the school of the abducted was also closed for summer vacations.

He told the court that the accused was also remanded in another case lodged at Gulistan-i-Johar police station Karachi by the concerned magistrate and her further remand had been sought till June 13, 2005.

Ms Sultana’s counsel told the administrative judge that interim bail had been granted to his client by the division bench of the Sindh High Court and a surety had been furnished in this regard.

The administrative judge ordered compliance with the court’s order and directed the IO to release the accused in the said case if not involved in other cases.—PPI
