Kent put struggling Glamorgan to sword

LONDON, June 9: Struggling Glamorgan were put to the sword on the first day of their English county championship game on Wednesday, South African batsman Martin van Jaarsveld scoring an unbeaten 174.

Van Jaarsveld guided Kent out of trouble from 16 for two early on following the cheap dismissals of openers David Fulton and England hopeful Robert Key.

Kent reached 357 for seven by the close of play thanks mainly to van Jaarsveld to put Glamorgan in further relegation trouble.

Van Jaarsveld’s run-making came with the help of 23 boundaries but no sixes and the South African’s only real support came from Darren Stevens, who included three sixes and eight other boundaries in his 105-ball 80.

James Ormond and Martin Bicknell shared most of the wickets as Surrey restricted Middlesex to 319 for seven at Lord’s.

Ormond took three for three for 63 and Bicknell two for 85, and Indian Test spinner Harbhajan Singh finally made his mark when he removed Jamie Dalrymple late in the day.

Middlesex had been kept in the match by Dalrymple as he hit 77, with Ed Smith scoring 60 and Ben Hutton chipping in with 44.

England bowler Matthew Hoggard enjoyed early success but Yorkshire went on to struggle against Roses rivals Lancashire in Division Two at Headingley as Iain Sutcliffe hit an impressive 153.

Hoggard claimed the early wicket of Mark Chilton but there was little else to cheer for the home crowd.

Seasoned campaigner Ian Harvey claimed four for 51 and Tim Bresnan also took three wickets.

Deon Kruis also chipped in with two wickets as the visitors were finally bowled out for 379 in the final action of the day.

Apart from Sutcliffe, whose 153 included two sixes and 24 fours, Stuart Law also contributed 46.

Sutcliffe was finally undone when he became Kruis’ second victim as wicket-keeper Ishmail Dawood claimed his fourth catch.

There were also lower order contributions from Dominic Cork (31) and Sajid Mahmood (24).

Somerset batsman Matthew Wood put his more illustrious team-mates in the shade as he guided the home side to 359 for eight against Worcestershire at Bath.

Wood outshone the likes of South Africa captain Graeme Smith and Sri Lankan international Sanath Jayasuriya.

Wood scored an unbeaten 114 as Somerset made the most of the fine weather.

Somerset had looked in trouble at 40 for two, but Smith (55) and Jayasuriya (66) put them back on an even keel before Ian Blackwell (54) and Wood helped tot up the batting bonus points.

Gareth Batty celebrated his late call-up to the England one-day squad with the wicket of Blackwell.

Batty, who featured in the Test series win over Bangladesh, will play for Worcestershire Thursday before leaving to join the England party with his county nominating a replacement for the remaining two days of the fixture.
